How the Holy Spirit Gives Christians Boldness
Fear is something we all experience. Whether it’s speaking about our faith, making difficult decisions or facing uncertain circumstances, fear can often hold us back from becoming the people God has called us to be.
The encouraging news found throughout the Bible is that God doesn’t expect us to rely on our own strength. Instead, He gives us the Holy Spirit to empower us with courage, confidence and boldness.
At our church in Stockport, we believe the Holy Spirit still equips ordinary people to live with extraordinary faith today.
The Disciples Were Ordinary People
It’s easy to imagine the disciples as fearless heroes, but the Bible paints a different picture.
Before Pentecost, they were often afraid. They panicked during storms, struggled to understand Jesus’ teaching and even hid behind locked doors after His crucifixion.
Peter, one of Jesus’ closest followers, denied knowing Him three times because he was afraid.
Yet only weeks later, Peter stood before thousands of people in Jerusalem and boldly declared the message of Jesus Christ.
What changed?
The answer is simple. Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:8 records Jesus’ promise:
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.”
The Holy Spirit transformed fearful followers into courageous witnesses.
Boldness Is More Than Confidence
Biblical boldness isn’t about having a loud personality or never feeling nervous.
True boldness is choosing to obey God despite our fears.
The early Christians continued to preach about Jesus even when they faced opposition, imprisonment and persecution. They weren’t relying on natural confidence—they were relying on God’s power working through them.
That same boldness is available today.
Many Christians discover that as they spend time praying, reading God’s Word and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead them, they become more willing to encourage others, pray for people and share the hope they have in Christ.
The Church Needs Courage Today
Our world needs hope more than ever.
People are searching for purpose, peace and lasting truth. As Christians, we have the privilege of sharing the life-changing message of Jesus with compassion and confidence.
Across many Stockport churches, there is a renewed desire to see people encounter God and discover His love. Rather than shrinking back, Christians are being encouraged to step forward with kindness, humility and courage.
Boldness doesn’t always mean standing on a stage. Sometimes it means inviting a neighbour to church, offering to pray for a colleague or simply living differently in a way that reflects Jesus.
Growing in Boldness
The wonderful thing about the Holy Spirit is that He continues to work in us throughout our lives.
God isn’t looking for perfect people. He’s looking for willing hearts.
