Discovering the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in Everyday Life
Have you ever wondered whether God could use you to make a difference in someone else’s life? Many Christians assume that spiritual gifts are reserved for pastors, evangelists or long-standing believers. However, the Bible paints a very different picture.
In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul teaches that every Christian is given gifts by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of others. These gifts are not about status or recognition; they are about serving God’s people and helping others experience His love.
At Bethany church, Sharston, we believe that every believer has a unique role to play in God’s Kingdom. As we learn to recognise and use the gifts God has given us, we become part of His work of transforming lives.
Every Gift Has a Purpose
Paul explains that there are many different gifts, but they all come from the same Holy Spirit. Some people may have a gift of wisdom, while others are gifted in encouragement, healing, prophecy, faith or serving others.
No gift is more important than another because each one contributes to the health of the Church. Just as every part of the human body has its own function, every Christian has been uniquely equipped to contribute to God’s mission.
Rather than comparing ourselves with others, we should ask, “How has God gifted me to serve?”
Spiritual Gifts Point People to Jesus
One of the most important principles in Scripture is that spiritual gifts are never about promoting ourselves.
Whenever God works through us, the focus should always be on Jesus Christ. Whether we’re praying with someone, encouraging a friend or serving quietly behind the scenes, our aim is to reflect His love and bring glory to Him.
The healthiest churches are those where people use their gifts with humility, recognising that every ability comes from God.
Growing in Confidence
Many Christians hesitate to use their spiritual gifts because they fear getting things wrong. Yet the New Testament encourages us to step out in faith while remaining grounded in Scripture and accountable to mature Christian leaders.
As we pray, study God’s Word and serve alongside others, we become more confident in recognising how the Holy Spirit is leading us.
Spiritual gifts often develop over time. The more we make ourselves available to God, the more opportunities He gives us to encourage, support and bless those around us.
Building a Strong Church Together
The Church was never designed to depend on a handful of people doing all the ministry. Instead, God calls every believer to play their part.
Whether your gift is welcoming visitors, praying faithfully, encouraging someone who’s struggling or sharing God’s Word, every act of service matters. Together, these gifts create a church family where people can grow in faith and experience God’s love in practical ways.
At Bethany church, Sharston, we’re passionate about helping people discover the gifts God has placed within them. We believe that when ordinary people allow the Holy Spirit to work through them, extraordinary things can happen.
If you’re exploring faith or looking for a church where you can grow and serve, we’d love to welcome you. Come and discover how God can use your unique gifts to make a lasting difference in your community and beyond.
