The Holy Spirit and the Mission of the Church
The Holy Spirit is not simply given for personal encouragement; He is given to empower God’s people for mission.
After His resurrection, Jesus told His disciples:
“As the Father has sent me, I am sending you… Receive the Holy Spirit.”
John 20:21-22
Long before this, the prophet Joel had spoken of God’s promise:
“I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”
Joel 2:28-29
John the Baptist also looked forward to this day:
“He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Matthew 3:11
At Pentecost, this promise was fulfilled, and Peter declared:
“The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off.”
Acts 2:38-39
The Holy Spirit transformed fearful disciples into courageous witnesses.
The same Spirit strengthens believers today. He gives us boldness to share our faith, wisdom to make good decisions and comfort during difficult seasons.
Jesus promised:
“Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.”
John 14:12
The Holy Spirit also works within us to shape our character. Christians often describe this as sanctification—the ongoing process of becoming more like Christ.
God’s purpose is not simply to forgive us but to transform us.
So who is the Holy Spirit, and what does He do?
He is God’s presence with His people. He comforts, teaches, guides, strengthens and empowers us to live for Christ.
The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone.
“Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20
