Why Praying in Tongues Strengthens Your Faith
One of the most discussed gifts of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. For some Christians it is a familiar part of their prayer life, while for others it can seem confusing or even intimidating. Yet throughout the New Testament, praying in tongues is presented as a gift that strengthens believers and deepens their relationship with God.

What Does the Bible Say About Speaking in Tongues?
The Apostle Paul devoted significant time to explaining spiritual gifts, particularly in 1 Corinthians 12–14. He recognised that questions and misunderstandings could arise, so he encouraged believers to seek understanding while remaining open to the work of the Holy Spirit.
Paul explains that speaking in tongues can involve both earthly languages and heavenly languages. On the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, people heard God’s praises in their own languages, demonstrating God’s power to communicate across cultures. Elsewhere, Paul speaks of “tongues of angels”, reminding us that this gift also has a spiritual dimension beyond human understanding.
The important point is that praying in tongues is directed towards God. It is an expression of worship, prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit.
A Powerful Way to Pray
There are seasons in life when we simply don’t know what to pray. We may feel overwhelmed by circumstances, burdened by anxiety or unsure how to express what is in our hearts.
Romans 8 teaches that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us when words fail. Praying in tongues allows us to surrender those situations to God, trusting that His Spirit is praying according to His perfect will.
Many Christians find that praying in tongues brings renewed peace, clarity and confidence during difficult times. Rather than relying solely on our own understanding, we allow the Holy Spirit to lead our prayers.

Paul also teaches that speaking in tongues builds up the believer spiritually. Like reading Scripture, worshipping, praying and gathering with other Christians, this gift can become part of a healthy and growing relationship with God.
Spiritual growth doesn’t happen overnight. It develops through consistent time in God’s presence, learning His Word and remaining open to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Praying in tongues isn’t a replacement for these spiritual disciplines, but many believers discover that it strengthens them as they continue to grow in faith and obedience.
A Heart of Worship
Speaking in tongues is also a beautiful expression of worship. Throughout the book of Acts, believers praised God as they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Sometimes our own words seem inadequate to express our gratitude, but the Holy Spirit helps us worship from the depths of our hearts.
This gift reminds us that worship is about encountering God, not simply singing songs. As we focus on Him, our hearts are lifted beyond our circumstances and centred on His greatness.
