Why Temptation Is a Sign You’re Alive
Understanding the Reality of Temptation
Temptation is something every believer encounters. No matter how long we have followed Christ, moments of temptation will still appear in our lives.
Unfortunately, many Christians feel discouraged when they experience temptation. They assume that if they were spiritually stronger, they would not struggle.
But Scripture paints a very different picture.
In fact, temptation can actually be a sign that our spiritual life is active and growing.
A pastor once said something powerful:
“Don’t be discouraged if you’re being tempted right now. It just means you are alive, you’re breathing, and you’re dangerous to the devil.”
That perspective changes how we view spiritual battles.
Joseph’s Moment of Testing
Joseph’s story in Genesis gives us a powerful example of how temptation works.
After years of hardship, Joseph finally found stability in Egypt. He had gained the trust of Potiphar and was placed in charge of the household. Everything seemed to be going well.
But just when life appeared comfortable, temptation arrived.
Potiphar’s wife noticed Joseph and began to pursue him relentlessly. Day after day she attempted to seduce him.
Scripture describes the persistence of her advances:
Genesis 39:10
“And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.”
Joseph faced an ongoing battle of temptation.
Temptation Is Not the Same as Sin
One of the most important truths for believers to understand is that temptation itself is not sin.
Temptation is the moment when we are presented with a choice.
The Apostle Paul reminds us of this in his letter to the Corinthians:
1 Corinthians 10:13 (AMP)
“No temptation regardless of its source has overtaken or enticed you that is not common to human experience… but God is faithful… and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability to resist, but along with the temptation He has provided the way out as well.”
This passage gives us incredible encouragement.
First, it reminds us that temptation is common. Every believer faces it. None of us are alone in our struggles.
Second, it reminds us that God is faithful.
God Always Provides a Way Out
Whenever temptation appears, God provides a way of escape.
Sometimes that escape looks like wisdom. Sometimes it involves accountability. Sometimes it simply means walking away from a situation.
Joseph recognised the danger immediately and chose to honour God instead of giving in.
His response shows us what it means to live a life fully committed to God.
When Potiphar’s wife invited him to compromise, Joseph did not hesitate.
Instead, he asked a powerful question:
Genesis 39:9
“How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”
Joseph understood that his relationship with God mattered more than temporary pleasure.
Choosing Faithfulness in Moments of Pressure
Temptation often comes when we least expect it. It may appear during moments of weakness, loneliness, or success.
But every temptation is also an opportunity.
It is an opportunity to choose obedience.
It is an opportunity to trust God’s design rather than our own desires.
And it is an opportunity to grow stronger in our faith.
Rather than feeling discouraged when temptation appears, we can remember that God has already promised to help us overcome.
Through His strength, we can stand firm.
