Why Flexibility is Essential for Spiritual Growth
Over the past few weeks, our church has been buzzing with life. From appointing a trainee assistant pastor, to Good Friday reflections, to a public Easter Sunday service and incredible testimonies. We even celebrated Simon and Lyndsey’s wedding blessing yesterday – God is certainly on the move!
As I prayed about the future and sought God’s direction for 2025, one word kept coming up: Flexibility. A church musician described how essential it is for band members to ‘flex’ – adjusting to changes and leading with flow. It resonated deeply because Romans 8:14 says, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” Flexibility is at the heart of following God’s lead.
As we grow older in faith, we often become set in our ways. We say we want change, but really, we often want things to return to a past season that we remember (sometimes more fondly than it truly was!). We bolt things down for the sake of certainty, but if we aren’t careful, we spiritually freeze without noticing.
Today, I want to introduce you to someone who embraced extraordinary flexibility – Obed-Edom. When the Ark of the Covenant was temporarily left at his house, he adjusted his whole life to host the presence of God safely and reverently.
Friends, the same power that resided in the Ark lives in us through Jesus! But like Obed-Edom, we must remain flexible, attentive and ready to move with the Spirit. This week, why not spend 30 minutes waiting on God? Set a timer, sit quietly and ask Him to show you where you might need to ‘flex’ spiritually. God speaks when we make space for Him.
Flexibility isn’t optional if we want to keep our spiritual edge. It’s the key to growing, moving, and transforming the world around us.
