When Life Gets Tough – Difficulty Defines Your Stance
When life gets difficult, how do you stand? Do you crumble under pressure, or do you plant your feet and face what’s coming at you? In Judges 7:1–15, we find Gideon – an unlikely leader – discovering that stance matters more than strength.
The Setting: A People in Trouble
Israel was in crisis. The Midianites and Amalekites had stripped their land bare, leaving God’s people hungry, anxious, and defeated. It’s not hard to draw parallels with our world today — people working tirelessly but seeing little fruit, nations gripped by uncertainty, families struggling to stay afloat.
Into this climate, God raises Gideon. Not a warrior from the battlefield, but a man from a vineyard — a reminder that God often calls ordinary people from ordinary places when the pressure is on.
Difficulty Defines You
When hardship hits, your stance is tested. Will you give up, give in, or stand firm? Maybe right now you’re facing bullying at work, family pressure, or a health scare. Perhaps life has knocked you off balance. The truth is, difficulty defines your stance — it shows what you’re made of and where your faith really stands.
Jesus faced the same. He was criticised, misunderstood, and constantly told to change His approach. But He didn’t. His stance — rooted in love, truth and obedience to the Father — threatened the establishment. Difficulty didn’t break Him; it revealed Him.
God Uses the Less to Shape the Strong
In Gideon’s story, God does something strange. He reduces the army twice — first sending home the fearful, then those who aren’t alert. Why? Because fear and complacency are contagious. God wanted only those with a warrior’s stance — alert, focused, ready.
Sometimes God allows “less” in your life — fewer resources, fewer supporters, fewer comforts — so you can stand stronger. Like David shedding Saul’s heavy armour before facing Goliath, we find our best stance not when padded by ease, but when forced to rely on faith.
Get on Your Feet
So don’t shrink when things get tough. Don’t back down when life feels unfair. Maybe, just maybe, God is using your difficulty to refine your stance. To make you more alert, more prayerful, more dependent on Him.
