We All Have an Account with God
Romans 5:12–14
We live in a world that is obsessed with upgrades. Whether it’s your phone’s operating system, your bank’s app, or the latest version of Microsoft Outlook, there’s always a new set of “account features” to figure out. And let’s be honest—while these upgrades promise a better experience, they can leave us more frustrated than fulfilled.
But there’s one account you have that’s far more important than your email, bank, or social media profile. The Bible tells us that we all have an account with God—and understanding the state of that account is crucial.
In Romans 5:12, Paul writes:
“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned…”
Paul takes us all the way back to the Garden of Eden. Adam, the first man, chose to disobey God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In that moment, humanity’s “life account” went into deficit. We lost our spiritual immortality, we were separated from God, and death—both physical and spiritual—entered the human experience.
Think of it like inheriting a bank account from your parents with a million-pound overdraft. That’s what Adam left us: a life in deficit from day one. And we feel that deficit daily—in our bodies, our relationships, our time, and our finances. We strive to fill the gap, but death and decay are always there in the background.
Verse 13 points out that even before the law was given to Moses, sin was already in the world. The deficit was already there, eating away at humanity’s hope. And verse 14 reminds us that Adam’s sin affected everyone, even those who didn’t break a specific command.
The sobering truth is this: without God, our spiritual account is bankrupt. All our good deeds—our kindness, generosity, and hard work—cannot reverse the damage Adam’s disobedience caused. We’ve lost paradise, and we can’t buy our way back in.
But Paul ends verse 14 with a glimmer of hope: Adam “is a pattern of the one to come.” In other words, someone else—another representative of humanity—is coming who can change our spiritual account forever.
And that’s where the good news begins.
