We all love a great escape story. From films to novels, we are drawn to moments where danger is avoided and freedom is found. The Bible is full of such stories, but one escape surpasses them all: the flight of Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus to Egypt in Matthew 2:13–23.
At the heart of this passage is a powerful truth — we are divinely valuable.
When people become parents, priorities shift dramatically. What once felt important suddenly fades into the background as a child becomes the central focus. That sense of fierce protection and love gives us just a glimpse of how God views humanity. In this story, Mary and Joseph are entrusted with a child of immeasurable worth. Jesus is not simply a baby needing protection; He is God’s redemptive plan for the world.
Interestingly, Matthew repeatedly describes them as “the child and his mother”. The order matters. Jesus is placed first, not to diminish Mary, but to emphasise His divine purpose. Yet in prioritising the child, God also protects the parents. When God values something deeply, He safeguards everything connected to it.
Joseph receives repeated instructions through dreams: “Get up.” These moments of sudden movement are vital. Valuable things are moved when they are threatened. Sometimes God tells us to wait; other times He tells us to move. Both are acts of protection. We often question our worth, especially in a culture obsessed with comparison. Social media, success stories and loud voices can quietly erode our sense of value.
But our value does not come from achievement or approval. It comes from revelation — seeing ourselves as God sees us. As sons and daughters adopted into His family, we are deeply treasured.
The world may tell us that the family unit is outdated or disposable, but this passage shows how fiercely God values family. He orchestrates escapes, waits and new beginnings to preserve it.
If you ever doubt your worth, remember this: God moved heaven and earth to protect His Son — and through Him, He has declared your value too. When God says “get up” or “wait”, it is not random. It is the careful movement of something precious. And you are precious to Him.
