The Grace of Giving
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 8–9
The New Testament presents giving not as a legal requirement but as a grace — a virtue to be pursued with joy. In 2 Corinthians 8–9, Paul outlines four key principles that shape Christian generosity.
First is the grace of giving. Just as believers seek growth in faith, knowledge, and love, we are also called to grow in generosity. Giving reflects the character of Christ and demonstrates a heart transformed by His grace.
Second is the example of giving — Jesus Himself. Though rich, He became poor for our sake. He gave His whole life, not merely a portion. His sacrifice sets the standard for Christian stewardship and reminds us that generosity flows from gratitude for what He has done.
Third is the extent of giving. Paul teaches that we give out of what we have, not out of compulsion or unrealistic expectation. God does not require us to create resources we do not possess; He simply calls us to be faithful with what He has already provided. As we give, He supplies all we need so that we may continue to bless others.
Fourth is the attitude of giving. God loves a cheerful giver — one who gives willingly and joyfully. The Greek word used suggests a sense of delight and eagerness. Giving should be an act of celebration, not reluctance.
Ultimately, generosity is a response to God’s grace. We do not give to earn His love but because we have already received it. Our giving becomes an act of worship and a partnership in His mission.
As we reflect on stewardship, we are encouraged to start where we are. Rather than feeling condemned for past failures, we can choose to begin afresh today. By giving faithfully and joyfully, we honour God and participate in the expansion of His kingdom. True stewardship reminds us that everything we have belongs to Him — and that we will never outgive His generosity.
