Prospering in Tough Times – Learning from Joseph’s Journey
In recent weeks, many of us have felt the pressure of rising living costs, global instability, and economic uncertainty. From energy price increases to international tensions, it’s no surprise that anxiety can creep in. During such times, it’s easy to shift into survival mode—protecting what we have and worrying about what lies ahead.
Yet, as a church in Manchester, we are reminded through Scripture that tough times are not the end of the story. In fact, they can be the very place where God begins to shape something powerful within us.
The life of Joseph in **Book of Genesis chapter 39 offers a remarkable example. Joseph’s journey was far from easy. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and later imprisoned unjustly, his life was marked by hardship and uncertainty. Yet despite all of this, the Bible repeatedly tells us something profound: “The Lord was with Joseph.”
This truth changes everything.
Joseph didn’t prosper because his circumstances were favourable—he prospered because God’s presence was with him. Even in the house of Potiphar, serving as a high-level steward, and later in prison, Joseph experienced God’s favour. His external situation didn’t define his internal reality.
This speaks directly to us today. As individuals and as a church in Manchester, what if we began to believe that we could prosper—even in difficulty? What if prosperity wasn’t tied to comfort, but to calling?
Joseph’s life shows us that adversity can be preparation. The dreams God gave him didn’t disappear in hardship—they were refined through it. Each challenge developed his character, resilience, and faith.
We often want God to remove the pressure, but sometimes He uses it to prepare us. Tough seasons reveal what we truly trust in. When everything else is stripped away, we are left with the one thing that matters most—God’s presence.
So instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” we might ask, “What is God forming in me?”
As we navigate uncertain times, let’s hold onto this truth: prosperity in God’s kingdom looks different. It’s not just about finances or comfort—it’s about growth, purpose, and favour that comes from walking closely with Him.
Joseph’s story reminds us that no matter how tough things get, God is still at work. And if He was with Joseph, He is with us too.
