Practising Care with Flexibility

When the Ark of God ended up in Obed-Edom’s home for three months (1 Samuel 6:6–11), it wasn’t a casual arrangement. The Ark had just struck someone dead for mishandling it! Obed-Edom had to exercise extreme care – but also incredible flexibility – to accommodate it safely.

He had to adapt his whole household: stopping kids from playing too close, stopping pets from jumping up, and treating the Ark with awe and reverence. Flexibility wasn’t about sloppiness; it was about careful, Spirit-led movement.

This story teaches us that flexibility must always be paired with diligence. Whether it’s our marriage, career, finances, or Church life, God entrusts precious responsibilities to us. And like Obed-Edom, if we are careful and flexible, blessing flows.

Interestingly, CIA documents suggest psychics once located a ‘powerful sacred object’ (thought to be the Ark) guarded by supernatural forces. Even they recognised that you couldn’t approach holy things casually!

We might not physically house the Ark, but when we gather in Church or live out our faith, the Holy Spirit – the real power behind the Ark – is present. Hosting God’s presence requires ongoing care, listening, and adjustment.

This week, ask yourself: where do I need to practise care with flexibility in my life? Is it my devotional life? My family? Serving in church?

True flexibility isn’t about doing whatever we feel like – it’s about creating space for God’s power to flow through our lives.
