Open Hearts Look Up and See Opportunity
Opportunity rarely shouts. More often, it whispers. It hides in everyday moments, in conversations, in needs, in decisions that seem small. Many people miss divine opportunities because their eyes remain fixed on the ground—on problems, on limitations, on the familiar. But open-hearted people look up.
In Genesis 29, Jacob demonstrates this beautifully. He arrives at a well and finds a group of shepherds lounging around with their flocks. It’s midday; the sun is high; the moment is ripe for movement. The sheep should be watered and taken back to pasture, yet the shepherds delay. They’re tired, distracted, lethargic, waiting for the crowd to gather.
But Jacob looks up. He sees the moment. He reads the situation. And when Rachel arrives, he seizes the opportunity—he rolls the stone away from the well and waters her flock. It’s a bold move for a young man who has nothing to offer except his willingness to serve.
Some might call it confidence. Some might call it courage. Scripture calls it open-heartedness.
When your heart is open, your eyes are open. When your eyes are open, opportunities become visible.
Many people miss opportunities in their career, family, relationships, or spiritual life simply because they’re not looking up. They assume nothing will change. They expect nothing new. They live grounded, safe, small.
But God is a God of opportunity. He presents new beginnings, fresh pathways, open doors, divine appointments. The question is not whether God is presenting opportunity—the question is whether we are looking up long enough to notice.
Jacob’s action changes the whole course of his life. His act of initiative becomes the doorway into his future. It leads him to Rachel. It brings him into Laban’s household. It sets the trajectory for everything that comes next.
Sometimes all it takes is one moment of looking up—one decision to act differently, to serve willingly, to step forward when others sit back.

Perhaps it’s time to reorganise your finances, serve someone in need, clear out what’s weighing you down, pursue a promotion, initiate reconciliation, join a ministry, or take the first steps towards something new.
Opportunity often looks ordinary. It often looks like effort. It often looks like service.
But for those with open hearts, ordinary moments become extraordinary gateways.
Today, lift your head. Look around. The opportunities are closer than you think. God is positioning you. Your future may depend on a single moment of looking up.
