The people we surround ourselves with shape us far more than we realise. Proverbs says, “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” (13:20). Friendships are powerful — they influence our decisions, our character, our habits, and even our spiritual direction.
So here is a question that is both challenging and necessary: Is Jesus at the centre of your friendships?
When we think of “making room for Jesus”, we often think about quiet times, church involvement, or personal devotion. But Jesus also cares deeply about the company we keep. Our friendships can draw us closer to Him — or quietly pull us away.
The Apostle Paul warns us clearly:
“Do not be misled: bad company corrupts good character.”
(1 Corinthians 15:33)
Our hearts are easily deceived. We tell ourselves, “I won’t be influenced,” or “I’ll change them,” but Scripture reminds us that the gravitational pull of ungodly companionship is real. Bad company corrupts — it does not refine.
So what does it look like for Jesus to be present in our friendships?
- Friendships that strengthen faith, not sabotage it.
A true friend doesn’t pressure you to compromise. They encourage you to grow. They challenge you when you drift. They help you stay accountable.
- Friendships where spiritual conversations are not awkward.
If you feel uncomfortable praying with your closest friends, something is missing. Godly friendship is open, honest, and spiritually natural.
- Friendships that sharpen you.
Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron.”
Good friends make you better. Godly friends make you more like Jesus.
- Friendships with honesty — not flattery.
Oscar Wilde famously said, “A true friend stabs you in the front.”
A godly friend will speak truth even when it hurts, because they care more about your soul than your feelings.
- Friendships that reflect Christ’s love.
Jesus surrounded Himself with people He loved deeply. He listened, encouraged, prayed, and invested in them. Our friendships should carry the same grace.
If you want to grow spiritually, choose your closest friends wisely. You do not have to cut people out of your life, but you should guard your inner circle. Influence travels most powerfully in close proximity.
And remember: be the kind of friend you want to have.
Be the encourager. Be the truth-teller. Be the prayer partner. Be the one who sharpens others spiritually. Good friendships do not happen by accident — they are cultivated.
Today, take a moment to reflect:
- Do my closest friends draw me nearer to Christ?
- Am I helping them grow spiritually?
- Would Jesus feel welcome in these friendships?
Making room for Jesus requires making room for godly friendships. And when we surround ourselves with the right people, our future becomes stronger, clearer, and more Christlike.
