How a Christian Can “Rob” God

Scripture: Malachi 3:8–9

Malachi’s question is startling: “Will a man rob God?” The very idea seems impossible. How could anyone steal from the Almighty? Yet God’s answer is clear — His people were robbing Him through their tithes and offerings. The problem was not only what they gave but how they gave.

The people of Israel were outwardly religious but inwardly disconnected. They brought sacrifices that were second best — offerings they could easily spare rather than gifts that reflected genuine worship. This revealed a deeper spiritual issue: a lack of love and honour for God. When devotion fades, giving becomes reluctant and minimal.

The word “rob” used in Malachi carries the meaning of defrauding or withholding what rightfully belongs to someone else. A helpful illustration is that of a trustee who holds an inheritance for a child. If that trustee keeps the inheritance for themselves, they have committed theft. In the same way, when God’s people withheld what He had asked for, they were keeping back what belonged to Him.

Interestingly, Malachi declares that the “whole nation” was guilty. Some may have given the correct percentage, but their hearts were wrong. God calls His people to bring the “whole tithe” — not just the right amount but the right attitude. Giving done begrudgingly or without love falls short of true worship.

This challenges us today. Stewardship is not simply about calculating percentages; it is about honouring God with sincerity and gratitude. When we give, we are expressing trust in God’s provision and acknowledging that everything we have comes from Him.

The message of Malachi is not meant to condemn but to awaken. God desires a people who worship Him in spirit and truth — whose giving flows from love rather than obligation. When we recognise His generosity toward us, our response becomes joyful surrender.

The question for us is not merely, “Am I giving?” but “Am I giving with the right heart?” Faithful stewardship is about bringing both the gift and the devotion behind it. When our giving reflects genuine love for God, it becomes an act of worship that honours Him fully.
