Help Is On the Way – Part 3: Let the Spirit Loose
Double glazing would have killed Pentecost.
It sounds like a strange statement, but when you really think about it, it’s true. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost was loud, chaotic, and public. It was uncontainable. Thin walls and poor insulation meant that what happened in the upper room couldn’t stay in the upper room.
In Acts 2, the Spirit’s arrival is accompanied by wind, fire, and a chorus of voices in every language under heaven. People in the street heard the sound and came running. If that room had been sealed off, if the noise had been contained, the crowd might never have gathered. The moment might have stayed private. But instead, it broke out.
Too often, we want our faith to be neat, quiet, and respectable. But the Holy Spirit isn’t easily boxed in. Revival rarely comes with a whisper. Sometimes it sounds like a riot. And if we’ve double glazed our churches—sealed off from the world, locked down by fear of what people might think—we risk muting the very move of God we’re praying for.
God’s power is meant to spill out. His presence is meant to overflow. Thin spaces—where heaven meets earth—aren’t insulated. They’re vulnerable, exposed, open to the sound of worship and the cries of repentance. They’re places where people encounter God, not because everything is perfect, but because everything is surrendered.
So, what are the double-glazed windows in your life? What are the things that muffle the Spirit’s voice or box in your passion for Jesus? Is it fear of judgment? Is it cultural respectability? Is it the need to have everything under control?
Let the Spirit loose.
We need churches that sound like Pentecost. We need moments of holy chaos, where people are so caught up in God’s presence that it can’t help but spill into the streets. We need to rip out the double glazing—spiritually speaking—and let the noise of revival echo beyond our walls.
Because when people hear the sound, they’ll come running. They’ll ask, “What does this mean?” And we’ll get to tell them about Jesus.
