Help Is On the Way – Part 2: Off-Grid Encounters
One of the most striking lessons from the story of Pentecost is that sometimes the help we need comes when we step away from the noise, distractions, and routines of everyday life. In Acts 2, the disciples find themselves in an upper room, off the grid, waiting. They were fearful, grieving, and uncertain about the future. But they were also seeking, praying, and obedient to Jesus’ instruction to wait for the promised Helper.
In today’s fast-paced world, the idea of ‘going off grid’ has become increasingly popular. From digital detoxes to remote living, many are realising that stepping back can help us move forward. The same was true for the disciples. They weren’t just hiding—they were preparing. They created space to seek God deeply, and in that vulnerable, unplugged space, the Holy Spirit met them powerfully.
We all need those moments. Whether it’s a day of solitude, a quiet retreat, or simply turning off the phone and spending time in God’s Word, these ‘off-grid’ moments are fertile ground for divine encounters. They allow us to recalibrate, to hear from heaven, and to receive fresh vision and strength.
Being off grid also meant the disciples were not relying on systems or structures. They had no clear strategy, no five-year plan. All they had was a promise—and that was enough. They were in a posture of surrender, dependence, and spiritual hunger. And that’s when God shows up.
When the Spirit came, it wasn’t a gentle breeze. Acts 2 tells us it was like a violent wind, a shaking, a sound that filled the house. Tongues of fire rested on each of them, and they began to speak in other languages. The power of God broke through into their ordinary reality and changed everything.
This is what being off grid does: it puts us in a place of readiness to encounter the raw elements of God’s power. It strips away the unnecessary and connects us with the essential. It breaks our dependence on human systems and reconnects us with divine strength.
And let’s be honest—sometimes we’re forced off grid. Loss, illness, transition, burnout—these can push us to places we didn’t choose but desperately need. Even in those hard places, help is on the way. The Holy Spirit meets us not in our perfection, but in our hunger, our weakness, our waiting.
So let’s not resist those seasons. Let’s embrace them. Let’s be a church that encourages rest, sabbath, and spiritual renewal. Let’s value people over productivity. Let’s build rhythms that help people get off grid when they need to, so they can reconnect with the Spirit and return with fire.
Because in the upper room, off grid, everything changed. The Spirit came, the church was born, and the world would never be the same.
Help is on the way—especially when we dare to step back and make space for Him.
