Hearts Open, Wide as the Sky: A Call for Our Time
We are living in a time when hearts are hurting. Society feels bruised, anxious, confused, and increasingly mistrustful. The statistics surrounding mental health alone reveal a crisis deeper than we have ever seen. Many have been misled, disappointed, disillusioned. People feel spiritually flatlined, emotionally shut down.
And yet, the message of the Gospel remains unchanged:
God still opens hearts.
God still heals hearts.
God still transforms hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.
The world is desperate for people who will live with hearts open, wide as the sky.
Jacob’s story gives us a blueprint for what this looks like. His heart was opened through encounter. He lived without fear. He stayed on mission. He looked up and saw opportunity. These three principles are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.
First, open hearts have no fear. Fear has become one of the most dominant forces shaping society. Fear of the future, fear of failure, fear of being judged, fear of falling short. Yet when Jacob encountered God in Genesis 28, fear melted away. When God speaks into your life—truly speaks—fear loses its grip.
Second, open hearts live on mission. So many people today feel lost, drifting without direction. But God never intended us to live aimlessly. He calls us to purpose. He guides step by step. Jacob’s mission seemed simple—find his family, find a wife, rebuild his life—but God turned that mission into the foundation of a nation. Your mission may look ordinary, but in God’s hands it becomes extraordinary.
Finally, open hearts look up and see opportunity. Instead of missing the moments God places before us, open hearts anticipate them. Jacob rolled away the stone because he saw a chance to serve. That moment changed everything.
What the Church needs now are people whose hearts are stretched wide—wide enough to love without limits, wide enough to trust God with every step, wide enough to see the opportunities that others overlook.
Perhaps the Lord is calling you into a season of openness. Perhaps you have been guarded, bruised, or stuck. Perhaps you’ve let fear dictate your decisions or allowed uncertainty to paralyse your calling.
But God still whispers the same invitation:
Open your heart.
Let Me heal it.
Let Me lead it.
Let Me fill it—wide as the sky.
When we live this way, the world notices. Our families notice. Our workplaces notice. Our churches come alive. Our communities change. Because open-hearted people carry the presence of God wherever they go.
Let this be a year where you live with a heart wide open—fearless, purposeful, and ready for every opportunity God places before you.
