Go, Gather, Speak: How to Break the Cycle of Spiritual Numbness
In Acts 17, Paul and his companions arrive in Thessalonica. By the end of their visit, they’ve been accused of “turning the world upside down.” Not bad for a few travelling preachers.
Paul’s method was simple but powerful: Go. Gather. Speak.
It’s a pattern we can all follow if we want to break free from spiritual numbness.
Go
Verse 2 tells us, “As was his custom, Paul went…”
He didn’t wait for the perfect opportunity, a well-advertised campaign, or someone else to take the lead. He simply went.
Too often, we wait until life feels less busy, until we have more resources, until we feel “ready.” The truth is, we’ll never feel fully ready. Going is an act of faith. It might mean inviting a colleague for coffee, visiting a neighbour you barely know, or showing up at an event where you can meet people outside your usual circle.
Gather
Paul didn’t just go—he gathered people. Verse 4 says he reached Jews, God-fearing Greeks, and prominent women. That’s a diverse crowd.
Gathering doesn’t have to mean organising a big event. It could be as small as bringing a few friends together for a meal, joining a local sports team, or offering your home for a Bible study.
The Western church often falls into the trap of thinking “gathering” is the pastor’s job—book the evangelist, run the campaign, disciple the people. But Jesus’ Great Commission to “go into all the world” wasn’t just for church leaders. It was for every believer.
Speak
This is where many of us freeze. We worry about saying the wrong thing or being rejected. But Paul “reasoned with them” (v.2), sharing why he believed in Jesus. I imagine he told his personal story—how an encounter with Christ transformed his life.
You don’t have to be a theologian to speak. Your testimony—what God has done for you—is powerful enough. It’s not about winning an argument, but about giving a reason for the hope you have
If you’re not sure where to start, keep it simple:
Jesus died in our place.
He rose from the dead.
We are made right with God through Him.
That’s the Gospel—the “too-good-to-be-true” news.

-Speak a word of hope into the conversation.
