Dreams are powerful. They give shape to our hopes, direction to our decisions, and courage to step into the unknown. Yet dreams rarely become reality by chance. They are fulfilled through preparation — often slow, stretching, and unseen.

In the biblical account of Joseph (Genesis 37:12–36), we see a young man who had remarkable dreams about his future. But those dreams did not unfold easily. Instead, Joseph’s journey reminds us that preparation is the pathway to purpose.

We can see a helpful modern parallel in elite sport. When Olympians stand on the podium, we witness a moment of glory — but that moment represents years of disciplined preparation. Countless early mornings, repeated drills, setbacks, injuries, and perseverance lie behind the medal.

In the same way, the dreams God places in our hearts require preparation. We may long for the outcome, but God is deeply concerned with the process that shapes us along the way.

Preparation does several important things in our lives:

  1. It builds character.

Dreams without character can lead to collapse. Preparation forms integrity, resilience, and humility — qualities necessary to sustain success.

  1. It deepens dependence on God.

When we cannot control the outcome, we learn to trust the One who can. Preparation shifts our reliance from self-sufficiency to God’s faithfulness.

  1. It clarifies our calling.

In the waiting and working, we often discover whether our dreams are truly aligned with God’s purposes.

  1. It strengthens perseverance.

Dreams worth pursuing will face resistance. Preparation trains us to endure difficulty without abandoning hope.

Joseph’s early life was comfortable, even privileged. Yet comfort alone could never prepare him to lead, to forgive, or to save nations from famine. The preparation he endured — though painful — shaped him into the man his dreams required him to become.

This challenges us to reconsider our own expectations. We often pray for fulfilment, while God is working on formation. We desire quick results, while God develops lasting maturity.

If you find yourself in a season of waiting, stretching, or uncertainty, it may not be a detour — it may be preparation.

Rather than asking, “Why is this happening to me?” consider asking, “How is this preparing me?”

Dreams are not fulfilled merely by wishing. They are realised through faithful preparation, trust in God’s timing, and perseverance through seasons that feel hidden.

Your current season may not look like the dream — but it may be shaping you for it.
