Choose Your Escape Doors Wisely
Scripture Reference: Acts 9:23-24; John 10:9
Paul’s life was in danger. After preaching boldly about Jesus in Damascus, people plotted to kill him. They even stationed guards at every gate of the city, watching day and night for a chance to capture him (Acts 9:23-24).
Imagine how trapped Paul must have felt. Every obvious exit was blocked. The very gates he had once entered freely were now locked to him.
Sometimes life feels like that for us too. We look for a way out of a difficult situation — a toxic job, a failing relationship, a financial mess — but every option seems closed off.
Here’s the lesson: the way we entered isn’t always the way we’ll exit.
In Damascus, there were seven city gates, but Paul couldn’t leave through any of them. Instead, his friends lowered him through an opening in the wall, hidden from view. It wasn’t glamorous, but it worked.
This teaches us an important truth: not every door is safe. Some doors look promising but lead to more pain. Others are blocked for our protection.
That’s why Jesus said in John 10:9:
“I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.”
When we face an escape room moment, we need to bring our decisions to the ultimate Gatekeeper — Jesus. He knows which door leads to freedom and which one leads to harm.
Maybe you’re feeling stuck today. You’ve tried every strategy you know, but nothing is working. The good news is that God already has a plan. The exit may not look like what you expected, but it will always lead to life and growth.

- Pray first.Bring your situation to Jesus before making any moves.
- Seek counsel.Surround yourself with trusted, godly friends who can help you discern the right path.
- Be willing to take the unusual route.Paul’s escape wasn’t dignified, but it saved his life.
When you feel walled in, don’t panic. Trust that Jesus is guiding you toward the right door, even if it feels hidden or unconventional.
Your freedom begins when you choose His way, not just any way.
