Boaz – A Father Who Led from the Shadows
Boaz: Strong, Generous, Honourable – A Dad to Follow
Boaz is one of the unsung heroes of the Bible. In the book of Ruth, he’s not the lead character—that honour goes to Ruth and Naomi. But Boaz’s role is critical. He’s the man in the background who helps redeem a broken situation and, through quiet strength and godly leadership, becomes the great-grandfather of King David.
Boaz teaches us five powerful traits of a great father.
- Strength and Leadership
Boaz was a strong leader. In Ruth 4, he takes charge during a complex land transaction, showing confidence, clarity, and the ability to hold his ground. Strong men don’t dominate—they stand firm. Our children need to see us lead with conviction and integrity, especially in a world where ground can be so easily lost.
- Provision and Sacrifice
Boaz doesn’t just marry Ruth; he redeems her. He uses his resources to lift someone out of poverty. Being a dad means providing—not just financially, but emotionally and spiritually. It’s about living selflessly, choosing the good of your family over personal comfort or ambition.
- Management and Modelling
Boaz would have involved his son Obed in his day-to-day life—managing workers, harvesting crops. Children learn more from what we do than what we say. Are we modelling godliness, discipline, and compassion? Our sons are learning how to be men, and our daughters are learning what to expect from men, by watching us.
- Honour for Women
Boaz honours Ruth. That’s rare, especially in a culture that didn’t often value women’s voices. Whether or not we’re still with the mother of our children, honouring her in front of our kids teaches respect, unity, and maturity.
- Being a Life-Giver
Boaz gives life—literally and spiritually. Ruth’s family line continues, and Naomi’s heart is restored. As fathers, we give life through our time, attention, and investment. Time is the glue of strong relationships. Whether you’re present every day or only speak weekly, your intentional contact brings life.
Boaz didn’t crave the spotlight, but his faithfulness echoes through generations. Let’s be dads like that—present, principled, and powerful in the quiet ways that matter most.
