A Brother Who Welcomes
Growing up, my childhood home wasn’t fancy or expensive, but it was full of love. My mum and dad had a gift for hospitality. Whenever someone came round, they struggled to leave because the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming.
People weren’t just fed – they were valued. They felt part of something special.
This reminds me of the way Jesus welcomes us. In Hebrews 2:12-13, the writer quotes words that reflect Jesus’ heart for His followers:
“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.”
“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”
These verses paint a beautiful picture of Jesus bringing us into God’s family.
When we put our trust in Him, He doesn’t just forgive our sins – He introduces us to our heavenly Father. It’s like He says, “Dad, I’ve come home… and I’ve brought the kids with Me!”
Jesus’ welcome is unconditional. No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, He opens His arms wide and says, “Come home.”
The church should reflect this same spirit. When someone walks through the doors of Bethany Church – or any church – they should feel that same overwhelming sense of love and belonging.
Hospitality isn’t just about offering a cup of tea (though that’s a good start!). It’s about showing people that they matter, that they’re seen, and that they’re loved.
Maybe you’ve experienced feeling unwelcome – at work, at school, or even in a church. Jesus is the opposite of that. He goes out of His way to bring people in, especially those who feel forgotten or rejected.
That’s why today’s pop-up church on the green is so important. It’s an opportunity to take the welcome of Jesus outside the walls of our building and into the community. It’s a chance to say, “You belong. You are loved. Come and see what family looks like.”
We can all play a part in this. Whether it’s inviting a friend to an Alpha course, greeting someone with genuine warmth on a Sunday, or simply showing kindness to a stranger, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Jesus is a brother who welcomes. Let’s follow His example.
