Jesus and the Spirit-Empowered Life
If we want to understand the work of the Holy Spirit, we need only look at Jesus.
Before beginning His public ministry, Jesus was baptised, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him.
“The Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove… and a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love.'”
Luke 3:21-22
Jesus began His ministry by receiving the Spirit’s empowering presence. This reminds us that before we can effectively serve God, we must first learn to depend on Him.
Immediately afterwards, Jesus was led into the wilderness.
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.”
Luke 4:1
Being filled with the Spirit did not remove hardship. Instead, it prepared Jesus to overcome temptation. Hebrews tells us:
“We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way… yet he did not sin.”
Hebrews 4:15
When Jesus returned, He came “in the power of the Spirit” (Luke 4:14) and declared His mission:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor…”
Luke 4:18-19
The Holy Spirit’s power was given for mission. Jesus healed the sick, restored the broken and proclaimed hope to the lost.
He also showed us what it means to surrender our own ambitions to God’s purposes.
“Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.”
Philippians 2:7
As believers, we are called to follow His example, relying not on our own strength but on the Holy Spirit.
