When Grace Reigns
At the heart of Joseph’s story lies a powerful truth: grace reigns.
Although Genesis records betrayal, suffering and family dysfunction, the overriding message is not human failure but God’s faithfulness. Through every setback, God was working out a greater purpose.
Joseph eventually recognised this for himself.
Standing before the brothers who had sold him into slavery, he made an astonishing declaration: “It was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.”
Rather than viewing his life solely through the lens of injustice, Joseph saw the hand of God guiding him through every circumstance.
This perspective transformed everything.
Joseph understood that his suffering had not been wasted. God had positioned him in Egypt to preserve lives during a devastating famine and to protect the future of God’s covenant people.
In many ways, Joseph points us towards Jesus.
Like Joseph, Jesus was rejected by those closest to Him. He was betrayed, falsely accused and handed over to suffer. Yet God used what appeared to be a terrible injustice to accomplish the greatest act of salvation the world has ever known.
The Apostle Peter explained that Jesus was handed over according to God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus became the ultimate agent of reconciliation.
This is the very heart of grace.
God did not wait for humanity to earn His favour. He took the initiative. Through Christ, He extended forgiveness, restoration and new life.
Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5 that God was reconciling the world to Himself through Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. He then entrusted believers with the same ministry of reconciliation.
That means grace is not merely something we receive. It is something we are called to embody.
When we forgive, grace reigns.
When we pursue peace, grace reigns.
When we choose restoration over resentment, grace reigns.
When we point people towards Jesus, grace reigns.
The story of Joseph reminds us that God can redeem even the most painful chapters of our lives. What others may intend for harm, God can use for good. What seems broken can be restored. What appears lost can be redeemed.
The challenge for every believer is to allow God’s grace to shape the way we live, speak and relate to others.
After all, we serve a God whose grace is freely given, whose love is unearned and whose desire is always reconciliation.
In the Kingdom of God, grace does not merely exist.
Grace reigns.
