In the World but Not of It – Living with Integrity
Living as a Christian in today’s culture can feel challenging. At our Church in Cheadle, we often talk about what it means to be in the world but not of it.
Joseph’s life is a powerful example of this principle. He lived in Egypt—a culture filled with different beliefs, practices, and values. He held a position of influence and had access to wealth and power. Yet despite all this, he remained faithful to God.
That’s not an easy balance.
Being “in the world” means we engage with everyday life—work, education, relationships, and society. But being “not of it” means we don’t adopt values that pull us away from God.
Joseph faced constant pressure to conform. Even his marriage into Egyptian society would have brought challenges. Yet he maintained his identity and honoured God openly.
We see this in how he named his children—Manasseh and Ephraim—names that reflected God’s faithfulness rather than Egyptian culture. Even in a foreign land, his faith remained central.
At our Church in Cheadle, we recognise that this tension still exists today. It’s easy to drift, to compromise, or to blend in. That’s why intentional spiritual habits are so important.
Taking time to reflect, pray, and evaluate our lives helps us stay aligned with God. Some people find it helpful to regularly pause and assess their priorities—asking questions like, Am I staying true to my values? Am I growing spiritually?
Integrity doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through daily choices.
The good news is this: it’s possible to live with integrity, even in challenging environments. Joseph proved it.
And so can we.
