The Three Areas Where Temptation Often Appears
Understanding Common Areas of Temptation
Temptation can take many forms, but throughout Scripture we see certain patterns appear again and again. Statistically and spiritually speaking, three areas frequently become sources of temptation: pride, money, and sex.
Before going any further, it is important to clarify something.
God is not against any of these things when they are placed in their proper context.
God is not against influence or leadership. In fact, He often calls people to positions of authority so they can bless others and lead well.
God is not against money. Scripture never says that money itself is evil. Instead, it warns about the love of money and the danger of allowing wealth to take God’s place in our hearts.
And God is certainly not against sex. He created it.
Within marriage, sex is designed to be a gift that brings intimacy, joy, and connection between a husband and wife.
When Good Things Become Misplaced
The problem arises when these gifts become disordered.
Pride replaces humility.
Money replaces trust in God.
Sex becomes separated from the covenant of marriage.
When these things are placed above obedience to God, temptation begins to pull our hearts away from His design.
In today’s culture, sexual temptation is especially visible. It surrounds us through television, social media, advertising, and entertainment. Images and messages that encourage lust or casual relationships are everywhere.
In many ways, the world Joseph lived in was not so different.
Joseph’s Encounter With Sexual Temptation
In Genesis 39 we read about Joseph’s encounter with Potiphar’s wife. She noticed Joseph’s appearance and began to pursue him aggressively.
Her intentions were not subtle.
She repeatedly invited Joseph to sleep with her.
For a young man living far from home, this was a serious test of character. Joseph had the opportunity to compromise in complete secrecy.
Yet Joseph understood something deeper about sexuality.
Sex Is More Than Physical
The Apostle Paul explains this beautifully in his letter to the Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 6:16–17 (MSG)
“There’s more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual mystery as physical fact… The two become one.”
Sex is not simply a physical interaction between two people. It carries spiritual and emotional significance.
God designed intimacy to create unity and commitment within marriage.
When sexuality is separated from that design, it often leaves people feeling emptier rather than fulfilled.
The Church Must Speak Honestly
For many years the church has sometimes struggled to address these topics openly. But silence does not help people navigate the challenges they face in everyday life.
Honest conversations about temptation, relationships, and God’s design are essential for healthy discipleship.
Joseph’s story shows us that even when temptation is persistent, it is still possible to remain faithful.
God’s design for our lives is always better than any shortcut temptation offers.
