When Life Hits Your Blind Side
Life has a way of surprising us. Sometimes those surprises are wonderful. Other times they hit us from the side when we least expect it.
In our current series looking at the life of Joseph, we encounter a powerful truth: Joseph had a blind side.
But before we look at his story, it’s worth asking ourselves an honest question: don’t we all?
A blind side is that place in life where we are vulnerable to unexpected blows. It’s the area where something happens that provokes deep reactions—anger, hurt, fear, disappointment or confusion. If those reactions are not handled well, they can damage both us and the people around us.
To be blindsided simply means to be hit by something unexpected.
History gives us plenty of examples. When Russian tanks moved towards Ukrainian territory, many people across the world were stunned by what they saw on the news. It was not something most expected to happen in that moment. Events like that remind us how quickly circumstances can shift.
In Joseph’s life we see something similar on a personal level. His journey was full of moments where he was blindsided—betrayed, rejected, forgotten and falsely accused.
Yet his story teaches us something incredibly important: there is a godly way to respond when life hurts us.
Those moments, painful as they are, can actually become part of God’s process of shaping our character.
The apostle Paul reminds us of God’s desire for our lives in 1 Thessalonians 5:23:
“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming.”
