Preparation is rarely painless. In fact, some of life’s greatest growth comes through its most difficult moments.
Joseph’s journey took a devastating turn when his brothers betrayed him. They stripped him of his robe, threw him into a cistern, and sold him into slavery. In a single day, he lost his status, his freedom, and the security of his home.
From a human perspective, his dreams must have seemed shattered.
Yet what looked like destruction was, in fact, preparation.
We often assume preparation will feel empowering and affirming. Instead, it may involve loss, rejection, delay, or disappointment. These experiences strip away illusions of control and force us to confront who we truly are.
Joseph experienced several painful realities:
Betrayal by those closest to him
Loss of identity and status
Injustice and suffering
Separation from family and homeland
Such experiences can produce bitterness — or they can produce maturity.
The difference lies in how we respond.
Suffering, when processed with faith, can deepen compassion, strengthen resilience, and refine character. It teaches us to rely on God rather than circumstances.
Delay, too, plays a significant role in preparation. We live in a culture that values immediacy, yet God often works through waiting. What feels like postponement may actually be formation.
The prophet Habakkuk reminds us that vision awaits its appointed time. Delay does not mean denial. It means the timing is being shaped for a greater purpose.
Many people abandon their dreams in seasons of difficulty, assuming hardship signals failure. Joseph’s story suggests the opposite: hardship may signal preparation.
If you are facing betrayal, loss, or unexpected hardship, consider the possibility that God is forming something within you that success alone could never produce.
Preparation through pain does not minimise the hurt. It acknowledges that God can redeem even the most difficult chapters of our lives.
Rather than allowing suffering to harden our hearts, we can allow it to deepen our faith.
Joseph’s dreams were not cancelled by his suffering — they were refined through it.
