In Joshua 24:15, the leader of Israel makes a bold declaration: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” These words echo through history because they capture something every family must face — a choice.
Who will my house serve?
We might not bow to idols carved from stone or worship deities from ancient cultures, but modern life offers its own collection of “gods”: success, money, comfort, entertainment, pride, self-interest, ambition, or image. Family life quickly becomes shaped by what we prioritise.
Every home serves something. The question is simply what.
Joshua stood before his people and challenged them to reject every rival, every distraction, every competing loyalty — and choose the Lord wholeheartedly. Not casually. Not occasionally. But with sincerity, truth, and commitment.
Families today need this same clarity.
To make room for Jesus in our family means:
- Establishing Christ at the centre.
He cannot be an occasional visitor in the home. He must be the foundation — the One our values, routines, conversations, and priorities revolve around.
- Replacing convenience with commitment.
Faith in the family is not built by accident. It takes intentional rhythms: praying together, reading Scripture together, worshipping together, attending church together, serving together.
- Rejecting spiritual “fence-sitting.”
Joshua challenged the people to make a choice. Many today want God’s blessings without God’s authority — wanting Jesus in the house, but not wanting to commit to Him. But faith does not flourish where there is half-heartedness.
- Fathers leading with courage.
Joshua spoke as a leader, a man, and a father. Today, many households desperately need men who will pray, lead spiritually, model humility, and set the tone of faith. Men who will say without hesitation, “My house will serve the Lord.”
- Teaching children not just what to believe, but whom to trust.
Children learn far more from what we do than what we say. When our kids see us worship, pray, repent, forgive, and serve, faith becomes real to them.
Jesus deserves to be more than a small part of family life — He deserves to be the heartbeat of it.
If your family seems too busy, too stretched, too distracted to centre itself around Jesus, then take courage: you do not need to be perfect. You just need to begin. One small step of obedience can reshape the spiritual climate of your entire home.
Joshua’s call still stands today. The choice still matters. And the impact of a Christ-centred family can echo for generations.
So choose today whom you will serve.
