We read the nativity story every Christmas, yet sometimes we rush past the line that ought to stop us in our tracks: “There was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7). No room for Mary, heavily pregnant after an 80-mile journey. No room for Joseph, weary and doing his best. And no room for Jesus — the Messiah, the King of Kings, the Creator of all things.
It is astonishing, isn’t it? The world had been waiting for the Saviour for thousands of years, and when He came, there was no space for Him. Not even a place with a proper floor — just a stable and a feeding trough. The King began His earthly life in a manger because the world was too full, too busy, too preoccupied to make room for Him.
Before we judge the innkeeper too harshly, perhaps we should pause and ask ourselves a harder question: Are we any different?
In all the noise, pressure, anxiety, and busyness of modern life, do we make room for Jesus? Or does He still get pushed to the margins, squeezed into the leftover spaces of our time, attention, and affection?
The truth is that Jesus does not simply want a “room” in our lives. He wants — and deserves — the whole house. He is not an optional extra or an occasional weekend visitor. He is Lord.
This is the heart of discipleship: making room for Jesus in every area of life – in our faith, our families, our friendships, and even our finances. Not compartmentalising, not keeping Him in certain rooms while barring Him from others, but embracing Him as the centre of everything.
Mary and Joseph improvised with courage, humility, and grace. They did not complain. They did not lash out. They trusted God in the chaos, and laid the Son of God in a manger. They made room — not because they had the space, but because they had surrendered hearts.
Today, the Lord invites us to do the same. To slow down. To unclutter our lives. To create space for Him to lead, to speak, and to transform us. Not reluctantly, but joyfully. Not out of duty, but out of love.
This Christmas season, as we look again at that humble manger, let us ask ourselves honestly and prayerfully:
- What room in my life have I kept Jesus out of?
- Where have I become too busy, too distracted, or too self-reliant?
- What would it look like to truly make room for Him today?
The King who had no room in Bethlehem now stands at the door of our hearts, not forcing His way in, but knocking. May we open wide. May we welcome Him fully. And may we give Him not just a room — but everything.
