Taking the Step: Why Baptism Is a Turning Point
Every baptism service carries a sense of holy anticipation. You can feel it in the atmosphere — a mixture of courage, excitement, nervous smiles, and the quiet certainty that something significant is about to happen.
For many believers, baptism marks a spiritual turning point. It’s the moment they draw a line in the sand and say, “My life belongs to Jesus.” But why is this moment so powerful? What actually changes?
Let’s start with something simple: baptism is obedience. Jesus asked us to do it. In Matthew 28:19–20, He told His followers to make disciples and baptise them. When we obey Jesus — especially in big, public ways — something shifts in our hearts. Obedience opens doors. It strengthens faith. It builds confidence. Baptism is often the first major act of obedience in the Christian journey.
Baptism also marks a transition into new life. The New Testament describes three foundational steps in the Christian journey:
- Conversion
- Water baptism
- Baptism in the Holy Spirit
The order sometimes varies — Acts 8 and Acts 10 show that — but conversion always comes first. Baptism follows soon after as a declaration of that change.
Another reason baptism is a turning point is that it involves community. When someone steps into the water, they are surrounded by witnesses — family, friends, church members — all celebrating the work of God in their life. That moment forges a spiritual memory they carry forever: “This is who I am now. This is the direction my life is going.”
People often wonder if they’re ready. The truth is, readiness isn’t about having everything sorted. It’s about recognising that Jesus has changed your heart. If you’ve repented, if you believe, if you’re ready to confess Jesus as Lord and obey Him, then you’re ready for baptism.
And yes — some of the best baptism stories come with humour. One man with a very messy past once told his pastor, “The old me keeps trying to come back… and I want to make sure he can’t swim.” He was baptised that day, and when he came up out of the water he shouted, “I feel lighter! I feel cleaner! I feel new!”
That’s the transformative power of baptism. Not because the water itself is holy, but because the moment represents surrender, faith, and freedom. It’s saying publicly:
The old me is gone.
The new me belongs to Jesus.
And I’m not turning back.

Step into obedience.
