Hearts Open, Wide as the Sky: Learning to Live Without Fear
We live in a world that is increasingly closed, guarded, and suspicious. People speak less, trust less, hope less, and dream less. It’s as though the collective heart of society has been shut down. Anxiety is surging, mental health struggles are spiralling, and people are desperately searching for meaning, reassurance, and hope. Yet the Gospel presents us with a radically different way to live: with hearts open, wide as the sky.
When we look at Jacob in Genesis 29, we meet a young man who has every reason to live closed off. He’s running for his life. He has no money, no protection, no experience, and no clear plan of what comes next. Everything familiar has been stripped away. And yet, when we see him arrive in Haran, he walks with an unexpected boldness. He approaches hardened shepherds. He asks direct questions. He leads with confidence. He fears no one.
Where does such confidence come from?
Genesis 28 gives us the answer. Before Jacob ever steps foot in Haran, he encounters God. He dreams of a ladder stretching to heaven, angels ascending and descending, and the Lord speaking promises over his life. That encounter opens his heart, and when the heart opens, fear loses its power. Jacob leaves home afraid—but arrives in Haran fearless.
Open hearts have no fear. They cannot, because fear and faith cannot coexist in the same space. When God opens your heart, fear is evicted. It loses its seat at the table.
Many of us live with quiet fears: fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of what people think, fear of confrontation, fear of stepping into our future. Fear paralyses the spirit and shrinks the soul. But the Lord calls us to live like Jacob—open-hearted and bold. Not reckless, not arrogant, but steady, confident, and courageous.
Some of the greatest encounters people have with God happen when they’re alone. Jacob was alone. Many of us avoid solitude because we fear what might rise to the surface. But moments of privacy are often the very moments when God whispers courage into us.
When we allow God to perform His spiritual surgery on our hearts—healing, restoring, softening—fear simply cannot remain. It dissolves in the light of divine reassurance.
Maybe today you’re facing a difficult conversation, a challenging meeting, a situation that feels intimidating. Maybe you’re surrounded by people who seem bigger, more influential, more powerful. But God calls you to walk forward anyway.
Open your heart. Ask for His help. Walk with courage.
Jacob approached the shepherds boldly. Today, perhaps you’re called to approach the thing you’ve been avoiding.
Because the truth is this:
Open hearts have no fear.
Open hearts walk boldly.
Open hearts trust the God who walks beside them.
And when your heart opens wide as the sky, you will discover that fear no longer determines your steps—God does.
