Deeds Are Your Thermostat
In Revelation 3:15, Jesus says to the church in Laodicea, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!”
It’s a challenging statement, and it reminds us that our deeds — what we actually do — reveal the temperature of our faith. Deeds are like a thermostat. They don’t just show the temperature; they set it.
Think about it: what we do with our time, why we do it, and how we do it all reveal what we’re passionate about. If our calendars are packed with busyness, but we’ve no time for God, something’s off. If we’re chasing validation from others instead of serving with humility, our motives have cooled. And if we cut corners in honesty, diligence, or integrity, it’s a sign our spiritual heat is dropping.
Jesus doesn’t just look at our words — He looks at our lives. He says, “I know your deeds.”
That’s both comforting and confronting. Comforting because He sees every quiet act of service, every unseen sacrifice. Confronting because He also sees when we go through the motions, when our hearts have cooled but we still “look hot” on the outside.
If I’m honest, there are moments when I’ve faked the heat. I’ve looked the part but lacked the passion. Ever felt like that? It’s so easy to become lukewarm — doing Christian things without a burning love for Christ behind them.
A few weeks ago, we went for a Sunday roast. I remember my turkey cooling quickly by the window. I had two options: eat it fast or ask for the microwave. I didn’t want a lukewarm dinner — I’d paid for a hot one! It struck me later that Jesus feels the same. He’s paid the ultimate price for us — His life — and He deserves a Church that’s alive, passionate, and full of heat.
He doesn’t want our faith half-hearted or indifferent. He wants it burning bright, because when we cool off, our witness cools off too.
That’s why deeds matter. Not because they earn our salvation — but because they show our salvation. They’re the outward expression of an inward flame.
When we serve at church, encourage a neighbour, pray for someone in need, give sacrificially, or take time to love others — those are heat-building deeds. They keep the fire of faith alive.
Our church’s “Connect Corner” is one small way we encourage this. Everyone can do something. Whether it’s helping on the welcome team, serving coffee, teaching kids, or praying behind the scenes — every deed adds warmth to the body of Christ.

Do your public deeds reflect Jesus in your workplace, your home, your community?
Are your church deeds drawing others closer to God or just ticking a box?
This week, ask yourself: What can I do for the Lord?
Not out of duty — but out of love. Because deeds are your thermostat, and Jesus deserves a Church that’s on fire for Him.
