Joseph – A Life Shaped by God’s Calling
One of the most inspiring stories in the Bible is the story of Joseph in Genesis 37–41. When Joseph was a young man, he received two dreams from God showing that one day he would be greatly used by Him. However, sharing his dreams with his brothers stirred jealousy and hatred. They sold him into slavery in Egypt, seemingly destroying his future.
Yet Joseph’s life reminds us that God’s calling is not dependent on easy circumstances. In Egypt, Joseph served under Potiphar, a man of influence. Joseph excelled in his work, proving himself faithful even in a foreign land. Potiphar entrusted him with his entire household. But then came another test. Potiphar’s wife falsely accused Joseph, and he was thrown into prison.
Most of us would become bitter and defeated under such injustice. But Joseph didn’t. He continued to serve with integrity even in prison, and soon the jailer trusted him with responsibility over other inmates. Everywhere Joseph went, his character shone, and God’s favour followed him.
Joseph’s story tells us something vital: God’s calling is not limited to church leaders, missionaries, or pastors. It’s for every believer. Abraham was a businessman, Daniel a government official, Ruth a homemaker, and David a shepherd boy. God calls ordinary people in ordinary jobs to live extraordinary lives for His glory.
Whether you are a teacher, a parent, a manager, or a student, you have been placed in your sphere of influence for a reason. When you live as someone called by God, your work and conduct change. You begin to see your job as an act of service to Him, not just a way to pay bills.
Joseph’s life shows that God’s calling can sustain you through trials and injustice. Even when life feels unfair, you are still chosen and positioned for His purpose. Live with the awareness that you are called, and He will see you through.
