Life Is an Escape Room
Scripture Reference: Acts 9:20-25
Have you ever tried an escape room? They’ve become incredibly popular in recent years. In these games, a group of people are locked in a themed room filled with puzzles and clues. The goal is simple: figure out how to get out before the clock runs out. It’s intense, fun, and at times, frustrating.
I’ve never done one personally, but I’ve watched people describe the experience. There’s a rush of adrenaline as you work together, solve challenges, and finally step out to freedom.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that life often feels like one long series of escape rooms.
We move from one situation to the next — a stressful job, a complicated relationship, a financial struggle, a spiritual challenge — and at times, it feels like the walls are closing in. Sometimes, we’re bored of the same old surroundings. Other times, we’re trapped in circumstances we never chose.
The Bible gives us a powerful example of this in Acts 9:20-25. In this passage, we meet Saul (who would later become the Apostle Paul). Saul had just experienced a dramatic conversion. He went from persecuting Christians to preaching boldly about Jesus in the synagogues. Talk about a 180-degree turn!
But his newfound faith didn’t go over well with everyone. Before long, people were plotting to kill him. The very city he thought he knew so well suddenly became dangerous and restrictive. Saul was literally walled in.
Maybe you’ve felt like that before. You’re in a season of life where:
- You’ve outgrown your current space.
- You’re surrounded by negativity or hostility.
- You’re desperate for a change but can’t see the way out.
If that’s you, take heart. Just like in an escape room, there is always a way out. God designed you for growth and movement, not to stay stuck staring at the same four walls forever.
In Acts 9, Paul’s friends lowered him in a basket through a hole in the city wall. It was unconventional, even a little embarrassing, but it saved his life. The same is true for us — sometimes our escape won’t look the way we expect. It may come through a surprising opportunity, a tough conversation, or even a complete change of direction.
Here’s the good news:
“God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” — 1 Corinthians 10:13
Whatever room you’re in today — whether it’s boredom, fear, or spiritual dryness — God has already prepared an exit. Your job is to stay alert and trust Him to lead you to it.
So here’s my challenge for you: look around your current “room.” What walls are holding you back? Ask God to show you the escape route He’s prepared. Then take a bold step toward the freedom He promises.
