Living as Jesus’ Brothers and Sisters

Over the last few blogs, we’ve explored what it means to have Jesus as our brother. We’ve seen that He has our back, fights for us, and welcomes us into God’s family.

But there’s another side to this truth – our response. If Jesus calls us His brothers and sisters, how should we treat one another?

Families can be messy. Even in loving homes, there are arguments, misunderstandings, and hurt feelings. But the family of God is called to something higher.

Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

This love isn’t just a warm feeling – it’s active. It looks like forgiveness when someone wrongs us. It looks like encouragement when a friend is struggling. It looks like generosity, service, and sacrifice.

Imagine a church where everyone truly lived this way – a place where people supported one another like true brothers and sisters. What a powerful witness that would be to the world!

In Hebrews 2, we see Jesus introducing us to the Father, saying, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.” We are those children. We are part of God’s family.

So how do we live this out?

  • At home: Show patience and kindness to your spouse, children, or siblings – even when it’s hard.
  • At work: Be the person who listens, encourages, and helps others succeed.
  • At church: Look for those who are new or on the margins and make them feel welcome.

These small acts of love make a big difference. They show the world what God’s family is really like.

Perhaps there’s someone in your life who needs you to step up as a brother or sister today. Maybe it’s a friend who feels alone, a neighbour going through a tough time, or a colleague facing stress at work.

Ask God to show you how to love them well.

As we live out this calling, we reflect Jesus – the ultimate brother. We become His hands and feet, drawing others into the family of God.

This week, let’s not just talk about love. Let’s live it.

Because when we do, we show the world that we truly are children of our heavenly Father – and that Jesus is indeed a brother like no other.
