A Brother Like No Other – The Beauty of True Brotherhood
There’s something special about having a brother. Many of us have experienced the unique bond that comes with growing up alongside someone who shares not just our family but also our life’s ups and downs. It’s a relationship that can bring joy, laughter, frustration, and sometimes even tears.
I grew up with a younger brother, and like most siblings, our relationship was a mixture of love and annoyance. When we were kids, we’d wrestle, play football, and get into mischief. He’d constantly borrow my bike without asking and had an incredible knack for appearing at the most inconvenient times – usually when I was trying to impress my friends or talk to a girl!
At times, I wasn’t the best big brother. I loved him, of course, but I didn’t always show it. In public, especially as a teenager, I often kept him at arm’s length.
But life changes. After I went away to university for a year, I returned home to find that my brother had grown up. He’d become strong, confident, and surrounded by his own group of friends. Our relationship shifted. We began to speak into each other’s lives, sharing advice, encouragement, and sometimes correction. Over time, our bond deepened, though it was far from perfect.
That’s the thing about human relationships – even the closest ones have their flaws. Brothers can hurt one another. Distance, circumstances, and misunderstandings can create gaps.
And that’s why I love how the Bible describes Jesus. In Hebrews 2, we read that Jesus isn’t just our Saviour, King, or High Priest – He also calls us His brothers and sisters. He chooses to be close to us.
This is remarkable. The God of the universe didn’t just remain distant and holy – though He is fully holy and worthy of reverence – He stepped into our mess. He took on flesh, walked among us, and experienced life as we do.
It reminds me of our new kittens, Enzo and Ada. They’re siblings, and one of my favourite sights is watching them sleep curled up together, paws wrapped around each other. There’s something deeply comforting about their closeness.
Jesus offers that same kind of intimacy and care. He draws near to us, wrapping us in His love and loyalty. He is a brother like no other – perfect, faithful, and full of grace.
When earthly relationships fail, when friends drift away, or when family lets us down, Jesus remains constant. He doesn’t keep us at a distance or reject us when we mess up. Instead, He brings us into His family and calls us His own.
Today, take a moment to consider what it means to have Jesus as your brother. He understands you completely, loves you unconditionally, and longs for you to draw near to Him.
No matter where you are or what you’re facing, you have a brother like no other – and His name is Jesus.
