Another crucial aspect of “watching your life” is how we steward the young talent God gives us. Paul’s relationship with Timothy exemplifies this. While Paul was like a spiritual father to Timothy, he also recognised the value of nurturing the next generation. Today, many young people carry incredible talent but lack the guidance or opportunities to thrive. If we don’t invest in stewarding young talent, they remain dormant—hidden potential that could transform lives and communities.
Paul gave Timothy responsibilities well beyond his years. Rather than control or dismiss him, Paul trusted him, gave him opportunity, and offered mentorship. When Paul called Timothy his “child in the faith” (1 Corinthians 4:17), it reflected a deep relationship built on trust and intentional investment.
This principle applies today. Families, churches, and communities need more “fathers” and “mothers” who invest in young people—mentoring, encouraging, and stewarding their gifts. Look around—you’ll see vibrant talents that might be hidden simply because no one has taken the time to nurture them.
In today’s UK culture, many young people grow up with absent or distant fathers—both physically and spiritually. That leaves a gap, often filled with negative influences or a lack of direction. This father wound can hinder their self-esteem and future opportunities.
As the church, it’s our responsibility to step in. Just as Paul did, we can empower young people by giving them responsibility, trusting their abilities, and providing support when they stumble. Paul didn’t hold Timothy back but challenged him to step out in faith.
We also need to start initiatives like youth groups and mentorship programmes—whether in church or broader community settings. These provide safe spaces for young talent to flourish.
Furthermore, young believers are encouraged to be confident in their identity. Paul’s advice in 1 Timothy 4:12 is: Set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Young people, you are never too young to make a difference. Use your voice, step out in faith, and live in a way that honours God.
Investing in young talent isn’t just about giving opportunities; it’s about pouring into them spiritually, morally, and emotionally. These young lives are the future of the Church and society. We must steward their gifts with care, wisdom, and love.
Let us be intentional in recognising and cultivating potential. The kingdom of God is built on the talents of His people—when we steward young talent well, we ensure a legacy that lasts for eternity.
