An Upgrade is Available
Romans 5:15–19
In our last post, we saw that every person has a “life account” with God—and that thanks to Adam’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden, we all start out in spiritual deficit. The bad news was sobering, but Paul doesn’t leave us there.
In Romans 5:15, we read:
“But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!”
Here’s the good news: an upgrade is available. Paul introduces us to “the one to come” mentioned in verse 14—Jesus Christ, the “second Adam” or “last Adam” (1 Corinthians 15:45). Unlike the first Adam, Jesus lived a perfect life, fully obedient to God. Where Adam’s disobedience led to death, Jesus’ obedience—culminating in His death on the cross—brought life.
Think of it like this: if Adam drained our spiritual bank account, Jesus not only pays off the debt but also fills it with unlimited resources. Verse 17 puts it plainly: through Adam, death reigned; through Jesus, we are given “abundant provision of grace and the gift of righteousness” so that we can reign in life.
This isn’t just about “getting into heaven one day.” Paul says it’s about reigning in life now—living with freedom, confidence, and hope because Jesus has transformed our account.
The story of Pastor Clyde Thomas illustrates this beautifully. A stable upbringing didn’t prevent him from spiralling into addiction after one poor choice as a teenager. Drugs, crime, and shame bankrupted his life. But when he encountered Jesus—first in a prison Bible, then in the kindness of a chaplain who arranged a train ticket to rehab—his life account began to overflow with grace. Today, Clyde is a pastor, helping others find the same upgrade.
That’s what Jesus does. He offers you:
- An abundant provision of grace
- The gift of righteousness
- The ability to reign in life
No matter how deep your deficit—whether caused by bad decisions, life’s hardships, or both—Jesus can take your account from minus to plus. Verses 18–19 sum it up:
“Just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.”
Your upgrade is available. You don’t have to keep living in spiritual overdraft. All you need to do is accept the gift Jesus is offering.
