When Culture Tells You Not to Speak
There are certain truths that, in decades past, would have been easy to say in public. You could express them without fear of backlash, confident that most people shared a common understanding. But times change. Today, some topics are considered so sensitive that the safest route—at least in the world’s eyes—is silence.
This pressure isn’t unique to our generation. Throughout history, people have faced moments where they had to decide between truth and comfort. In ancient times, leaders were known to literally cut out sections of God’s Word they didn’t like. They believed removing the uncomfortable parts would solve the problem. Yet truth doesn’t stop being truth because we ignore it.
Many in the modern church are tempted to do the same, only more subtly. Instead of scissors and fire, we use omission. We simply avoid passages, doctrines, and conversations that might offend. The reason? We don’t want to lose friends, cause division, or appear “out of touch.”
But here’s the reality—if culture is setting the boundaries of what you can or can’t believe, you’re no longer letting truth lead you. You’re letting fear guide your faith.
When we speak truth in love, it’s not because we enjoy conflict or want to make life difficult. It’s because we care about people’s eternal well-being more than our temporary comfort. The most loving thing we can do is to share the whole truth—not a cut-down, edited version that fits neatly into cultural expectations.
There will always be a temptation to stay quiet, especially when speaking could cost you something—a friendship, a job, your reputation. But silence comes at a greater cost: it erodes conviction, weakens witness, and leaves people without the opportunity to hear life-giving truth.
Yes, we must speak with gentleness, patience, and compassion. Our goal should never be to wound. But we must also resist the growing idea that anything which challenges current norms is “unloving” or “outdated.” That mindset has silenced too many, and it’s time to reclaim courage.
Truth isn’t defined by trends. It doesn’t expire after twenty years. And it doesn’t need to be rewritten to fit the cultural mood. Our job is to hold it up—clearly, humbly, and faithfully—trusting that God will use it to reach those who are searching for real answers.
If you’ve been avoiding certain topics out of fear, remember: the same God who calls you to speak is the One who gives you strength to do it. Courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s choosing obedience despite it. And obedience, in the end, always leads to freedom.
