Jesse: A Father Who Released Giants
Jesse is the last of our “dads in the shadows.” He was the father of eight sons and two daughters, including the most famous king of Israel—David.
We read about Jesse in 1 Samuel 17, where three of his sons are already off fighting in Israel’s army, and young David is still tending sheep. Jesse isn’t front and centre in the story, but the way he fathers speaks volumes.
- He Released His Children
Jesse released his children into the world. Three of his sons became established soldiers. They were trained, mature, and focused—when David shows up to deliver food, they’re strategising about how to defeat Goliath, not asking about home.
As fathers, our job isn’t to keep our children clinging to us—it’s to prepare them to stand on their own. That’s not always easy. Releasing them into a messy, broken world takes faith and courage.
But we don’t raise them to stay children. We raise them to be men and women who carry God’s kingdom with them wherever they go.
- He Was Assertive, Not Aggressive
Jesse tells David: “Take this roasted grain and bread to your brothers. Take some cheese to their commander.” And David goes—no arguments.
Assertiveness matters in parenting. It’s not about being controlling or harsh, but about setting healthy boundaries and expectations. Kids actually feel more secure when they know where the lines are.
Sometimes it means saying no, standing your ground, and letting them experience disappointment. That’s how they learn resilience.
- He Kept Watch from the Shadows
Perhaps the most touching part of Jesse’s story is this: even though he’s far from the battlefield, he’s still watching. He tells David, “Find out how your brothers are and bring back assurance.”
He’s keeping up contact. He’s gathering intel. He’s still fathering—just from a distance.
This is crucial. As kids grow up, they need more freedom—but not abandonment. We can’t control every decision, but we can stay involved. A text, a phone call, a moment of connection—that’s how we keep the relational bridge open.
When they’re soaring, we cheer them on. When they stumble, we’re close enough to catch them.
Dads in the Shadows: You Matter
Jesse wasn’t flashy. He didn’t lead armies or write psalms. But he released a giant-slayer into the world and kept watch as he did it.
