Dads in the Shadows: A Father’s Day Reflection
When we think of fathers in the Bible, the mind often turns to the well-known, high-profile figures—heroes of faith whose stories fill chapters. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll notice something surprising. Many of the most famous dads in Scripture also made some huge mistakes when it came to fatherhood.
Adam raised a murderer. Abraham and Isaac both lied about their wives to save their own skins. Eli turned a blind eye while his sons abused their priestly positions. King David’s failings with his own family are heartbreakingly clear. These men were chosen by God, yes—but they were far from perfect dads.
It made me stop and ask: What are dads for?
Sometimes, as fathers, we can feel like assistant parents. Like the ones who bring the kids to football practice or pop in for school events but aren’t central to the big emotional or spiritual shaping. We feel like dads in the shadows—like we’re playing a secondary role.
But while preparing this Father’s Day message, I sensed God saying: Being in the shadows isn’t a lesser place—it’s a sacred one.
When reading the genealogy of Jesus in Luke 3, I came across three men: Boaz, Obed, and Jesse. Each was a father. Each lived in the shadow of more famous descendants—David and, eventually, Jesus Christ. Yet each played a vital role in God’s redemptive story.
These were “dads in the shadows,” but they raised incredible children. Their legacy speaks not through fame, but through faithfulness. And that’s something modern dads can aspire to.
What if the greatest calling of a father isn’t to be in the spotlight, but to shape lives from behind the scenes?
