Blessing the Margins—Why Missional Pockets Matter
We’ve seen that Jesus intentionally entered the spaces others avoided—the pockets on the edge. But let’s take this deeper: Why the margins?
Because that’s where hope is needed most.
In John 1:43–50, we find Jesus inviting Philip to follow Him. What does Philip do? He immediately finds Nathanael and says, “Come and see.” At first, Nathanael is sceptical. But when he meets Jesus, something powerful happens: Jesus blesses him.
He says, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” (v47)
Jesus didn’t just preach truth; He spoke blessing. He called out destiny. He saw value. And He did it in the margins—not in synagogues or formal gatherings, but among seekers, doubters, and everyday people.
And that’s our calling too. Find the pocket. Enter it. Bless someone.
Here’s a powerful modern example: At a recent wedding, I chatted with a pastor who also works as a builder. Years ago, he was invited to Israel to consult on how to improve ambulance stations. Out of that came a remarkable missional pocket: teams of tradesmen now travel across borders—refurbishing both Israeli and Islamic Red Crescent ambulance bases, free of charge.
That’s missional living. He didn’t start with a sermon. He started with a hammer and a heart to help. Now his missional pocket spans two faith groups and touches countless lives.
What if mission isn’t about getting people into church, but getting the church into people’s lives?
We must stop expecting ministry to happen only in our comfort zones. Instead, we’re called to burst our bubble and meet people where they are.
Jesus said, “Go into all the world.” Not “Invite the world into your building.”
So, who can you bless this week? Who needs you to step into their story, not with judgement, but with presence, love, and invitation?
Maybe it’s:
- A friend going through a tough time.
- A colleague who seems lost.
- A neighbour with no one to talk to.
- A stranger you meet at the school gate or coffee shop.
You carry the Kingdom. You are the salt. You are the light.
It’s time to bless the margins.
