Know Your Anthem – Discovering God’s Purpose in You

In the Palm Sunday story, one thing is striking: Jesus knew His anthem. He didn’t stumble into Jerusalem by chance. He wasn’t caught up in a crowd. He chose this moment. He orchestrated it. Why? Because He knew what was written about Him, and He knew it was time to step into that purpose.

In Matthew 21:1–5, we see Jesus sending His disciples ahead to fetch a donkey. Why a donkey? Because it was a fulfilment of prophecy – “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey.’” (Zechariah 9:9). He was intentionally stepping into His calling. He was declaring His anthem to the world: humble, servant-hearted, sacrificial King.

Jesus knew what was ahead – the cross, the suffering, the shame – but He also knew His purpose. That gives us an important truth:

You have an anthem. You have a calling. God has placed purpose within you.

It may not be obvious yet. It may not feel grand. But trust me – there’s a song in you that the world needs to hear.

Like Jesus, we find our anthem through Scripture, through obedience, through intimacy with the Father. And often, like Jesus, we discover it when we lay down our own plans and dreams.

Before I met Jesus, I never imagined being a church leader. I had no interest. I wanted success, money – anything but ministry. I thought vicars were weird. But God had a different plan. When I surrendered my life to Him, I began to hear a different sound. That sound became my anthem.

And so I want to ask you today:

  • What are the anthemic sounds in your life?
  • What do you feel passionate about?
  • Where do your gifts and strengths lie?
  • What stirs your heart for God and others?

These are clues to the anthem God has placed in you.

The world will try to drown out that anthem. It will offer you comfort, distraction, status, or fear. But Easter is a season of clarity. It’s a time to ask afresh: Lord, what is my purpose in this season? What is the song You’ve placed in me?

Let me encourage you – take time this Holy Week to listen. Just 30 minutes alone with God. No distractions. Just you, Him, and that question: What is my anthem?

If you’re unsure, ask others to pray with you. Get honest. Be vulnerable. You don’t have to figure it all out in one go – but you can begin tuning your heart to the sound of heaven.

Your anthem matters. Don’t let it fade into the background.
