The Power of Running Over Generosity
Jesus taught the principle of abundant generosity in Luke 6:36: “Give, and it will be given to you—a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over.” This means that when we give, God doesn’t just return it; He multiplies it until it overflows.
We’ve all experienced spills—some minor, some disastrous. My wife once had a brand-new laptop, and within days, a bottle of vanilla essence spilled onto it, seeping into the keys. The result? A permanently broken “B” key. That spill had lasting consequences.
Now, imagine if our generosity had a similar, but positive, running-over effect. What if our giving resourced our churches and communities in such an overwhelming way that the impact was undeniable? When we choose to live with open hands, we position ourselves for divine overflow.
Generosity isn’t just a spiritual concept—it has material consequences. Everything in church life requires resources. I recently attended a church leaders’ gathering where a pastor who had raised £15 million for his church over four decades made a simple yet profound statement: “Without money, we are stuffed.”
This isn’t about just meeting budgets; it’s about kingdom expansion. We are called to a higher level of generosity—not just to avoid deficits, but to step into abundance.
So, where do you stand? Are you sowing from a place of diminishing returns, increasing returns, or running-over returns? God challenges us to trust Him in our giving. Whether you’re giving from little or much, the principle remains the same: what you sow, you will reap.
I encourage you today—review your giving. If you’re sporadic, consider becoming consistent. If you’re new to giving, take that first step. And if you’re already giving faithfully, ask God how you can step into a new level of running-over generosity. When we put God first in this area, He always blesses us beyond what we can imagine.
