Moving from Interest to Practice in Prophecy
Many Christians are interested in the prophetic but hesitate to step out in faith. However, Scripture commands us to eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:1). So, how can we move from interest to practice?
Recognising Prophetic Gifting
Prophetic people often have strong convictions about truth and justice. They are sensitive to God’s voice and seek to bring encouragement and correction. Signs of prophetic gifting include:
Sensitivity to God’s guidance.
A burden to speak truth and call the church to holiness.
The ability to discern cultural and spiritual trends.
Practical Steps to Grow in Prophecy
Ask God for the Gift – Paul encouraged believers to desire prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:1).
Practice in Safe Environments – Start in small groups, life groups, or prayer meetings.
Speak with Humility – Use phrases like “I believe God is saying…” rather than “Thus says the Lord.”
Test Prophecy – All prophecy must be tested against Scripture and discerned by mature believers (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21).
Step Out in Faith – Sometimes, a word from God comes with a sense of urgency. Be bold in sharing it, trusting that God will use it to bless others.
