The Danger of Diminishing Returns

Paul warns in 2 Corinthians 9:6 that those who sow sparingly will reap sparingly. This is a sobering reality many of us face. Have you ever worked tirelessly but had little to show for it? Have you ever felt like your financial resources run out before the month does? This is the concept of diminishing returns in action.

A simple example is baking. When my wife, Katie, baked banana bread, the amount of batter she prepared determined the number of loaves she produced. If she had used only a few bananas, she would have made just one small loaf. But because she went all in, we had plenty to enjoy.

This principle extends to all aspects of life. Think about relationships. If you want to connect with someone special, you can’t just sit back and hope for the best. You need to invest in conversations, time together, and even small gestures like a cup of coffee or a thoughtful message. Without sowing, there is no harvest.

The context of Paul’s message is financial generosity. The Corinthian church was wealthy but reluctant to give, unlike poorer churches that were abundantly generous. Paul challenged them—and us—to break free from a scarcity mindset and trust in God’s principle of sowing and reaping.

Diminishing returns happen when we hold back. But what if we chose to sow more? What if we moved from just getting by to thriving? God calls us to step into abundance through radical generosity.
