Consecration and Our Elim Family
“Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.”— 1 Peter 2:17 (The Message)
We live in a world where cynicism often dominates. Whether it concerns the Church, faith, or government, negativity seems to be the default mindset for many. Sadly, this perspective can seep into our attitudes towards our spiritual family and our Church. Cynicism breeds hopelessness, which in turn leads to despair. However, we can overcome this through a consecrated heart and a renewed commitment to community.
Peter’s words in this verse provide a profound manifesto for Christian living:
- Love Your Spiritual Family – This means choosing to be committed to your church and speaking well of it, even when it does not meet all expectations. Around the world, many face persecution or risk their lives for following Jesus. While our challenges may be different, we must remember that the Church remains a place of beauty, hope, and transformation. Love for our spiritual family involves patience, grace, and an unwavering dedication to its mission.
- Revere God – To revere God is to place Him in His rightful position—as holy, sovereign, and beyond human manipulation. It is tempting to reshape God according to our personal preferences, but true reverence embraces both His holiness and compassion. Worship, obedience, and service flow from a heart that recognises God’s greatness and submits to His divine authority.
- Respect the Government – Respecting the government does not mean blind agreement with every decision but rather honouring the institution of leadership and praying for those in authority. As believers, our response should always reflect grace and hope, even when we disagree. In a world filled with division, we are called to model Christlike humility and integrity.
Commitment to the Elim Family
Though not perfect, the Elim Movement is full of signs of life, growth, and God’s presence. Instead of focusing on its shortcomings, we should celebrate what is good. When discussing areas that need improvement, let us do so constructively. Constructive criticism builds up; cynicism tears down.
God has blessed the Elim Movement with passionate worship, a love for His Word, diverse communities, faithful leaders, and testimonies of healing, deliverance, and revival. Let us rejoice in the Spirit’s work among us and commit to being part of the solution where change is needed.
A consecrated church begins with consecrated individuals. We each have a role to play in fostering unity and growth within our church community. Consider these questions:
-What role have you been avoiding that you could step into?
-Who can you encourage today through words of affirmation and prayer?
-Where has cynicism crept into your heart, and how can you surrender it to God?
For Reflection and Prayer
This week, think of one way you can show your commitment to Elim—whether by attending a regional gathering, reaching out to encourage a leader, or praying for God’s continued hand on our community. A simple step of faith can have a profound impact.
Ask God to consecrate our hearts so that we may love His Church more deeply. Pray for a servant’s heart that enables us to serve with humility and joy.
Let us choose to build up rather than tear down. May we look for the beauty and potential God has placed within the whole of Elim and commit to being a source of encouragement and hope within our spiritual family.
