Understanding the Fivefold Ministry Gifts – The Apostolic Gift
The Church is at its best when it operates with all the gifts God has given it. In Ephesians 4:11-13, we read how Christ has given the Church five key ministry gifts: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. These gifts are not about creating celebrity Christians; rather, they exist to equip and prepare the Church for effective service.
One way to understand the fivefold ministry gifts is to think of them as a hand. The apostolic gift, in this analogy, is like the thumb. It touches and interacts with all the other gifts, providing a catalytic and pioneering influence. It is an essential gift that brings movement, vision, and leadership to the Church. Without it, the Church often functions at reduced capacity, like a hand with only three fingers.
But what does the apostolic gift mean for us today? In its narrowest sense, the office of Apostle was reserved for those who had seen the risen Christ and were directly commissioned by Him. However, in a broader sense, the apostolic gifting continues to be present in the Church. Apostolic people are those who pioneer, reform, and innovate within their communities and workplaces. They are visionaries who build, lead, and establish new initiatives that advance the Kingdom of God.
